The Little Mermaid

The Sea King’s youngest daughter is told a mermaid has no soul of her own, but if a man comes to love her more than his own life, his soul will flow into her like water into water, and she will have her share of what does not die. At twenty-one she rises to the surface, pulls a drowning prince out of a storm, and decides she wants both the man and what he carries.

The witch’s bargain buys her legs and costs her voice. Every step on land cuts like walking on knives, and the bargain has left her nothing to scream with. So she studies the gentle temple maiden the prince is meant to marry, copies her lowered eyes and serving hands, and waits at his knee to be chosen.

After he takes her to his bed carelessly, she stops waiting to be chosen. The prince finds his hands corrected, his mouth put to work, his pleasure tied at the door like a dog. And still the palace moves toward a wedding, because the witch’s terms hold: bind the prince, or on the first morning after he marries another, dissolve to foam on the water.
